The UK’s LGBT+ Theatre
Above The Stag Theatre is an award-winning theatre in Vauxhall, London with a focus on producing LGBT+ themed work including new writing, musicals and revivals. We are the only full-time professional LGBT+ theatre in the UK.
Above The Stag Theatre was founded in 2008 by Peter Bull who secured a space above The Stag, a gay pub in Victoria, London, which has since been demolished. In 2013, we opened our Vauxhall home with adult pantomime Jack Off the Beanstalk.
As a registered charity, we also host exhibitions, rehearsed readings and other events throughout its annual programming offering new writers, photographers and other forms of artists a platform to present their work.
Awards and accolades include:
- Boyz Awards 2014, 2015, 2016
- Offie nominations for Grindr: The Opera
- Artistic director Peter Bull was nominated for a Natwest sponsored British LGBT Award in the category of ‘Outstanding Contribution to LGBT Life’
- Runner-Up, Time Out Love London Awards 2016
What’s in a name?
The name Above The Stag comes from our original home in a function room above The Stag pub in Victoria.
Did you know?
Above The Stag alumni Christopher Gattelli (Silence! The Musical) and John Pinckard (Minor Gods) have both won Tony Awards.
Above The Stag alumni Paul Taylor Mills (My Big Gay Italian Wedding, Sleeping Beauty – One Little Prick, Sleeping with Straight Men) and Miles Western (Silence! The Musical) have both won Olivier Awards.
Less than 30% of bookings for our first production 9 years ago were made online. Currently more than 95% of bookings are made online.
All three of our patrons are actively involved in the theatre, rather than just putting their names to it. As well as regularly attending performances, Su Pollard has a cameo voiceover role every year in our pantomime, Andy Bell has performed in a musical for us as well as doing fundraising concerts, and Lord Michael Cashman hosts post performance Q&A sessions.
